The Gentlewoman

Writes Karin Nelson, of the NY Times Style magazine PULSE –

“WITH magazines folding at an accelerated clip, now would seem an inauspicious time to introduce a title. Penny Martin, the editor of The Gentlewoman, a new twice-a-year style guide and sister publication to Fantastic Man, thinks otherwise. “The best magazines have always come out of a recession,” she said. “The Face, i-D, Blitz — they all launched in 1980, after the winter of discontent. Strangely enough, this doesn’t feel odd at all.”

Of course, it helps that The Gentlewoman, a stylish, thinking gal’s read infused with a certain retro charm, is unlike any other women’s magazine out there. Content includes profiles on the designer and cover girl Phoebe Philo and the artist Jenny Holzer; kitschy conversations with creative types on topics like intimacy and housekeeping (Penny: How do you feel about air fresheners? Daisy Lowe: I use candles instead); tips from 39 women on what to give as gifts (the photographer Inez van Lamsweerde suggests lingerie pouches from D. Porthault); and a how-to for fashioning hair knots.

“We’re not here to give the last word on trends,” Ms. Martin said. “The luxury is that it’s good quality, editorially. We choose one thing and really sing.”
