.. What did Einstein Really Say?

Good Morning All!

I just came across this Albert Einstein, US (German-born) physicist (1879 – 1955), quote… “Great spirits have always suffered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” ~ Nooooooooo. Of course, one of the greatest thinkers the world has ever produced ~ So it’s worth taking a moment to ponder over…But I wasn’t sure of the quotes legitimacy – It didn’t sound quite right.

Well it turns out it was worth checking… The famous are often misquoted.

Here is the quotation as it appeared in the New York Times, March 19, 1940:

” Great spirits have always found violent opposition from mediocrities. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices, but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence and fulfills the duty to express the results of his thought in clear form.”

Albert Einstein

The late and Great Thinker Extraordinaire ~:

As you can see above, the generic term “mediocrity” was replaced by the incorrect, and personalized version – “mediocre minds”. It appears that the quote has been abbreviated, but in so doing, distorted, perhaps personalized, and lost its Real Truth.

The points it was trying to convey required the entire sentence! Something along the lines of needing to utilize intelligence with originality, courage and clear communication… Hmnn

Which leaves me to conclude, the blog begun with a question, to finish with another Question: Quote or misquote.. That is the Question.

~ Cheers, Bird.
